The summer months are here and electricity cost are going up. You are doing everything in your power to pay your bills but it’s just not enough. Lite-Up Texas is a government program to help low income families pay their electricity bill during the months of May, June, July, August and September.
It is easy to apply online. You will need to provide paystubs, signed tax forms, W-2s and other household income documents to show you qualify. You can mail the documents or fax them to the Lite-Up Texas program.
You can call 1-866-454-8387, email [email protected] or fax 1-877-215-8018 to get more information about enrolling in Lite-Up Texas. The chart below has information about income brackets.
Information above is from the PUCT’s website.
If you don’t qualify for Lite-Up Texas there still are several things you can do to lower your electricity cost in the summer.
It’s Getting Hot in Here
Setting your air condition above 75 degrees instead of 72 degrees can save 3 percent per degree on your cost for electricity. It’s going to get hotter. The cool thing about summer is you can always wear less cloths like shorts and a tank top instead of jeans and a t-shirt.
Shopping for a lower rate on electricity is not always the answer when looking to cut cost. Breaking contracts with electricity companies can cost $200 which is over $15 a month for a 12 month contract. It is always good to shop around after your contract has ended.
You can compare electric companies by typing in your zip code and clicking compare.
