In deregulated parts of Texas there are 20 or more retail electric companies a home or business can use to shop for electric service. Brazos Cooperative came face to face with bankruptcy.
The courts and ERCOT worked out a debt repayment plan and as a part of this plan cities like Bryan Texas may be letting in competitive retail electric providers.

Electric Rates and Electric Companies in Bryan, Texas
The Brazos Electric Cooperative which serves 18 member Cooperatives has some big changes ahead.
The Coop agreed to sell their energy power plants and become a distribution and transmission service provider. They will no longer be a power generation company. The agreement worked out to pay off their debts has been solidified with Oncor.
The power plants will be sold off but competitive retail electric providers may be coming in. Most of the rest of the state of Texas has their electricity market deregulated.
It’s possible a large company like Luminant could buy their power plants but at this point it would be speculation to know who would win the deal.
Energy customers can pick an electric company in places like Dallas and Houston without having to rely on a sole electric supplier such as in the Brazos Cooperative territories.
Bryan Texas, Waco Texas, Corsicana Texas and many other member cities in the Cooperatives network may soon have The Power to Choose.
